Loft Insulation

Loft Insulation Saves Up To 25% of Heat Loss

Insulating your loft is a great way to reduce the cost of heating your home and an effective measure in lowering CO² emissions. Non-insulated and poorly insulated lofts can account for up to 25% of heat loss in a home. Installing loft insulation can help save on average over £200 per year on the cost of heating your home. The grants that are available cover a minimum of 50% of the cost of loft insulation. Many households will be eligible for free insulation and will receive a 100% grant, depending on individual circumstances.

How does Loft Insulation work?

With an un-insulated home the heat rises through the building and eventually escapes through walls, doors, windows and the roof. When the hot air rises through a house and comes into contact with cold air in a loft, it can cause condensation and damp, which will cause structural damage to roof beams trusses joists and most other materials. This is seen in nature when cold air from the sea meets warm air rising from land and results in rain and fog. Loft insulation creates a barrier to prevent the warm air rising up through the loft and forces it back down into the home. The final result being a warmer and quieter home with reduced heating costs, lower CO² emissions, an overall improvement in energy efficiency and lower maintenance costs. Remember combining Loft and Cavity Wall Insulation will greatly reduce cold, draughts, energy costs, noise and your carbon footprint.

How much Insulation do I need?

Currently the recommended depth of loft insulation is 270mm and 300mm in new builds, this can be installed in non-insulated lofts. Lofts with existing insulation, but below the recommended depth may be able to be topped up to 270mm. However the depth can vary, depending on which insulating materials are used and their individual insulating properties.
